Ballistic Fiberglass Panels: The Core of Safe Room Walls

Often called "bulletproof drywall" or "ballistic drywall," these are actually rigid UL 752-rated fiberglass panels installed behind or in place of standard drywall. Made from layered woven fiberglass cloth compressed with resin, they provide proven stopping power while remaining lightweight and workable compared to steel alternatives.

    Key Advantages of Ballistic Fiberglass

Discreet: Hidden behind regular drywall, paint, or veneer for a normal appearance.

Effective: Stops bullets where standard walls fail (e.g., a single thin panel can halt 9mm rounds).

Versatile: Suitable for new construction or retrofits; easier to install during builds.

Finish Options: Can be painted, veneered, or covered for seamless integration.

    Lower Levels vs. Higher Levels

    Levels 1-3

Thinner (0.25–0.5 inches), easier to cut/install with standard tools, more affordable. Ideal for handgun threats.

    Levels 4-8

Thicker (1+ inches), stops rifles; harder to work with, higher cost, but essential for advanced protection.

Pro Tip: We recommend installing panels during construction for cost savings and future-proofing—add a ballistic door later if needed.

    UL 752 Ballistic Protection Levels

We select materials based on UL 752 standards, the industry benchmark for ballistic resistance.

Safe Room Design and Construction in Sonoma County

A professionally constructed safe room offers Sonoma County homeowners a level of security that no alarm system or door lock can match. XKaleber by SCB Builders designs and builds safe rooms tailored to the specific threat profile of your property and family — whether your primary concern is wildfire, home invasion, earthquake, or a combination of hazards common to the North Bay.

What Is a Safe Room? A safe room (also called a security room or panic room) is a reinforced space within your home designed to provide a refuge in emergencies. Unlike a simple "locked room," a properly built safe room has reinforced wall assemblies, a secure steel door rated to resist forced entry, dedicated ventilation that prevents smoke infiltration, and communication capability for calling emergency services. Our safe rooms comply with FEMA's safe room guidelines and, where applicable, ICC 500 storm shelter standards.

Ballistic Wall Protection. Our signature offering is the integration of UL 752-rated ballistic fiberglass panels into your existing or new walls — completely invisible behind standard drywall, paint, or veneer. These panels are classified by protection level: Level 1–3 panels (0.25–0.5 inches thick) stop handgun threats from 9mm through .44 Magnum; Levels 4–8 (1+ inch) provide protection against rifle rounds including 7.62 NATO. A single 4×8 foot panel installed in a standard stud wall creates a barrier that stops threats that ordinary construction cannot. Panels are available in custom sizes and can be combined across multiple walls for room-level protection.

Doors, Locks, and Ventilation. Safe room doors are reinforced steel units with multi-point locking systems. We source commercial-grade security doors rated to resist sustained forced entry and equipped with deadbolt and bar-style locking bars that engage from inside the room. For smoke-infiltration protection, we install filtered positive-pressure ventilation systems that maintain fresh air inside the room while preventing wildfire smoke from entering — critical in Sonoma County where seasonal smoke events are a documented hazard.

Integration With New Construction or Existing Homes. Safe rooms are most cost-effective when built into new construction — we can frame the reinforced room during rough framing at minimal additional cost. For existing homes, our retrofit process involves opening specific wall sections, installing panels, and restoring finishes to match the existing interior. Most retrofits are completed in 3–5 days with minimal disruption. The finished room looks and functions identically to any other room in your home — there is no visual indicator that it is a safe room.
